As mentioned in the previous segment about our students, this year we are adding a percussion ensemble to the KMS Band program. Typically we get to explore classical percussion in these settings through the use of keyboard percussion or drums like timpani, snare drum, and bass drums. However, there is an entire world of percussion outside of the European style. Hand drumming teaches students about music systems in Latin, African, and Middle-Eastern cultures. These are genres of music that traditional band literature seldom explore and give students an opportunity to find new musical ideas and connect with different cultural understandings. Additionally, hand drumming is accessible to ALL band students regardless of their primary instrument as the barrier to entry is very low.
