My students struggle with academic material. They are all labeled with a disability which affects their progress with the general education curriculum. For many of them, they have had to learn to have a positive attitude toward struggling with new material. For many of my students, Physical Education time was a time for them to show their strengths. One student, who was very shy when it came to sharing his academic work, became a team captain when we started playing flag football. He would call his team in a huddle, discuss their strategy, and call for a "Break!". I have seen how Physical Education could transform my students into leaders. I started researching team building activities to teach students how to work as a team and encourage each other. To show students that they all have strengths and have the ability to help their peers. In addition to our P.E. time, my students need frequent breaks and I have recently incorporated "Brain Based Breaks" into our daily routine. These are short movement breaks where students can get a chance to move their bodies in order to get more focused for the next task. Students can use their mats during their Brain Based Breaks as well as our P.E. time. Having more P.E. equipment will let our class be leaders in living a healthy lifestyle at our school. It will highlight their strengths as well as preparing them to face challenging academic work.
