This is the first phase in establishing our new classroom, but nonetheless the most expensive phase. We are passionate about catering to our students where they are not only academically, but developmentally. Our flexible seating will give our students an opportunity to move, create, and critically think outside the realms of a traditional classroom setting. We want students to achieve success personally and academically using both traditional and modern approaches. We believe students should be culturally competent locally and globally. Through our instruction, we hope students will gain a better understanding of where they place themselves in society without any bias or limitations.
I have specifically chosen a flex space comfy couch as a seating option for my students to utilize during all-block and/or independent reading time. There will be a space allocated in the classroom for this comfy couch along with the rug I have chosen.
Another flexible seating option are the kid-size director chairs. Once classroom norms and expectations are discussed; the students will have the opportunity to utilize these chairs throughout the entire instruction period.
For students who will not be utilizing the flexible seating options, it was imperative to Ms. Nelson and I to build an environment that would be organized, however conducive to the students learning. Versus having cubbies for the students space and them having to go back and forth during class, we have chosen storage sacks so that our students can easily access their materials during class without disrupting our learning time together.
Lastly, we have chosen a mobilized cart. We do not wish to have big teaching desks that would take away from the space allocated for our flexible seating options. This cart will allow us to store materials that would have traditionally been stored in the teacher desks.
