My students attend Ptarmigan Elementary in Anchorage, Alaska. Ptarmigan is a Title I school with approximately 75 percent of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch. Student enrollment in grades K-5 is about 450 students. Nearly 90 Ptarmigan students are English Language Learners, and 60 students receive special education services. The Ptarmigan student body is represented by a wide range of ethnic groups. This school is the home school for three regionally based self contained special education classes. Many of Ptarmigan's families consist of single parents often working two jobs to make ends meet. My students all receive special education services in a resource setting. They have varying disabilities, but all require specialized instruction to meet their academic and/or social-emotional needs.
