I have found that students get bored when listening and learning about something they don't have a life connection to. The curriculum is pretty cut and dry. It doesn't make that life connection and these books can do that for my students. I want my students to want to learn beyond what we talk about in our lessons. It is possible to connect with those you never knew or thought you had a connection to. In our curriculum we discuss Fairy Tales and Tall Tales right off the bat. A good majority of the year we discuss the history of our country. For example we discuss the underground railroad, famous American's and the contribution they made to society, as well as the importance of the historical documents and the people who helped with our Country's creation. I hated history when I was in school. I went on a field trip with my son to Washington D.C. as a chaperone. I was able to see the areas where so many things actually happened in creating our country. Now I have a thirst for historical knowledge. I want to make those kinds of connections for my students so they don't have to wait until they are adults, like I did.
