It’s likely that I don’t have to convince you that books have academic merit or the research suggests reading is among the most important skills for literacy. But when students have a comfortable environment in which that can find books about contemporary topics, they are more likely to pick it up and stick with it. My goal is to inspire intrinsic motivation for students; I don’t want them to read, I want them to HAVE reading in their lives. I want for them to be able to lean in to the books that they relate to and become more empathetic as they read the stories of others. I want them to be able to turn to books as an escape sometimes and as a way to engage with the world when it is beyond their grasp. I want my students to become capital “R” Readers. 2020-2021 is my first year teaching. My pocketbook and I have exhausted the thrift stores and created quite the collection, and my students are loving it. I need shelves (!) and some more recent books to stay relevant and develop the creative, comfortable classroom library that I envision. ALL students (whether in my classes or not) are welcome to borrow books!!!
