This project will bring diverse literature to students in rural Illinois. These books will provide students with the exposure to characters, experiences, circumstances, etc. that will help shape them into thoughtful and well-rounded citizens. A book about a sexual assault may provide insights about rape culture on campuses around the country. These students will benefit from culturally relevant literature and will help increase their empathy. Literature helps provide perspective to kids who may feel isolated in their small town. Students will meet these characters throughout the books, who they may never meet in a real-life situation but who will make a real impact. These titles will build readers who are engaged with the world around them.
