Last year I was granted with a Pets in the Classroom Grant which provided me with a pet and habitat material/coupons to introduce a pet into my class. I chose a bearded dragon for my students since Beardies are the coolest (I had one when I was growing up) and I thought it would be useful in scaffolding learning from social emotional lessons to science lessons! Taco Thomas, our Beardie, has been a huge part of our classroom dynamic ever since. The class enjoys reading books about him (and even regular dragons), feeding him, giving him a bath, talking to him when there is no one they feel comfortable to talk to and MORE. Since my school has a prominent special education program it has helped many children feel comfortable and excited to come to school regardless of any delays or disabilities they may face. Children who normally have a hard time getting dropped off to school run through the door to see him. Children with speech delays communicate with classmates by reading stories about bearded dragons or feeding Taco Thomas together. The grant that funded his start only took our learning with him so far and frankly he outgrew his terrarium. I want to teach the children how to PROPERLY take care of a pet and need your help to acquire a terrarium, leash, books and other supplies. Last year my classroom parents helped a ton by buying treats, dishes and reading material but it is an understatement to say he is at least 5 times the size he was when I got him. Taco Thomas has already reached 40+ children and with each new year he will reach 20+ more. Please consider helping our classroom and Taco Thomas!
