A fidget tool is a sensory strategy used to help children achieve self-regulation. Self-regulation is the ability to maintain an optimum level of awareness in order to participate in daily activities. My students are working on building self awareness through mindfulness and learning strategies to calm themselves under stress. Self-regulation is a critical component of learning, as it can impact a student’s attention, emotional regulation and impulse control; this is directly related to their classroom performance and overall experience at school. The theory behind fidget tools is that it provides a sensory experience to increase self-regulation, attention and participation. For some kids, the demands of the classroom environment exceed what their bodies can handle. This can lead to an increase in behaviors can be inappropriate and distracting in the classroom. These tools will be provided to my students during individual counseling when they need to take time in our peace corner. They will have the opportunity to bring these tools into their classrooms, which will lead to more mindful, regulated, and engaged learners!
