While the students in my school and classroom are learning to love a variety of genres and types of literature, many of them rarely have the opportunity to be read to in English outside of school, as we service a primarily Spanish-speaking population. Although I teach a monolingual class, the students' first language is generally Spanish, and many of our parents have only limited English at their disposal. My fifth graders are also quite the techies! Learning through the use of technology excites them, but again, this is often something they can only have access to at school because I work in a low income area, where over 90% of our student population receives free or reduced lunch. Our school implements the Daily Five structure for our literacy block. The students absolutely LOVE it! The freedom it affords them to make their own decisions regarding what they read is a powerful learning tool. I hope to help kindle this love of reading by improving our "Listening to Reading" center.
