Being in a rural and underfunded county, it can be difficult to keep up with the standards that are set when the resources are scarce. With a world that has been and will continue to be immensely changed by technology, how are we preparing our students for the workforce if we do not give them the experience they need when many jobs, as we know it, will be outsourced to technology? Providing my students with tablets will not only give them the opportunity to use scholastic applications and resources to enhance and showcase their knowledge, but it will also get them accustomed to and prepared for the technological world that awaits them. I teach around 90 kids split up into 6 classes each day. My hope and plan for my class is that each day I can incorporate a new technological component that will excite and challenge my students in a way that is difficult, if not impossible to achieve with pencil and paper. I teach multi-level groups of learners, ranging from honors to inclusion. Each one brings light to my classroom with a head ready to learn and heart ready to love. However, with some of my students, reading and math levels are at the 1st and 2nd grade level, causing them to be up to 7 years behind. Some examples of applications that I plan on using are Study Island, Reading Eggs, News ELA, Khan Academy, and e-books. We do not have textbooks or many other key literature pieces that would benefit literacy across all subjects. With these tablets, I can expose them to reading resources that we would otherwise not have because of the price of hardbound books and texts.
