My class is a self-contained 6:1:2 classroom that is made up with students who are severely cognitively impaired. The students In my class are mostly nonverbal. They have difficulty communicating their needs and wants, which leads to many aggressive behavioral problems. Many of my students communicate using a PECS book (picture exhange communication). This book only consist of the students highly preferred items so it usually is very limited. Higher functioning students may communicate using an IPad. My goal as a teacher is to support my students and help them become independent. We work on ADL skills (hand washing, toileting, tooth brushing, etc), vocational skills, behavior management, and social skills. Simple skills that most of us don't think twice about are very difficult for my students for a number of reasons. We work on different tasks through ABA and discrete trials.
