Teaching the students at Franklin Classical Middle through service learning has been a passion of mine from the start. Although the initial program started 17 years ago with only paper recycling, we now recycle markers, tennis shoes, batteries as well as cans and bottles. Almost six years ago, community volunteers started and have maintained a garden in the front of the school. Five years ago, we began a sorting station which allows the students to reduce their carbon footprint at lunch. Uneaten food from the sorting station is donated to shelters through the help of Food Finders. To date, over 65,000 pounds of food from our site has been diverted from landfills to the needy. Our next goal is to promote health and wellness while helping the environment. We have done this by holding free reuse-an item events and providing basic needs through our Giving Project. Thank you!
