I teach a diverse group of students at a public high school. Many students are taking my chemistry class because it is required for graduation and college admittance, not because they are entering with a love and appreciation of science. My students tend to need a creative and unique way to interact and relate to the material being taught. We use Interactive Notebooks in our chemistry class in order for the students to have a way to express their creative processing of the information they learn, while simultaneously learning organization and note taking skills. Students draw pictures, write poems, create mini "fold-up" projects, create their own problems to solve, summarize, design labs, and all sorts of other open ended processing techniques. My goal is for students to leave my room at the end of the year learning chemistry, but also valuable learning and study skills they can take with them and apply anywhere.
