We are in a Title I school trying to build up our STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) program. Most of our students come from humble backgrounds and qualify for free lunch. My students are smart and hardworking. They are not afraid of a challenge or extra-work. My class introduces students to engineering and robotics. The purpose of the class is to gage their interest in engineering, robotics and other STEM careers. My students follow the engineering design process to design and build products. One of our design challenges involves building a car entirely made of pasta. The car has to be functional – meaning that it has to survive rolling down a ramp in a straight path. Another challenge involves designing and building scale model of a furniture made out of poster paper. For that, they have to design and work on engineering drawings before they build their scale model. It has to be realistic and functional, and it is quite a challenge!
