On the first day of class, my students walked into my room and saw two sad little lamps I had left over from my college apartment. "How home-y!" they exclaimed. They were also excited about the $20 secondhand rug I had picked up from Craigslist and the three dilapidated fake sunflowers in a plastic vase. I was surprised by their enthusiasm considering how little else our massive, naked, echoing classroom boasts, and I set out to exceed their expectations. These gifts will help me do that. In our down time, I want them to be able to play Scrabble together to work on their vocabulary. I want to show my Speech and Debate class clips of amazing debaters using functioning computer speakers. I want them to be able to read fascinating new books that aren't tattered and old. I want them to be able to breathe in the calming scent of lavender when they're stressed or angry, or to be able to make our secretary or security officers a nice cup of tea with our electric kettle when they need a break. I want to be able to print inspirational texts to hang on our walls. I want them to lounge in a bean bag chair during our independent reading time. I want them to be happy, comfortable, and safe here.
