My students are 6th, 7th, and 8th grade Special Education students with learning disabilities in reading and writing. They come in all shapes and sizes, but have one thing in common: they are desperate to be literate. Their average reading level is 2nd grade. (Some are even lower.) At this point, most of them are resigned to the fact that reading is something that they will never "get", but I beg to differ. I believe that with targeted instruction and the ability to feel successful, my students CAN and WILL catch up to their grade level peers.
