When I first started teaching my students how to write research essays, there was a lackluster response. The topics that I had materials for them to research were limited and, quite honestly, a bit boring. As they wrote their essays, they were able to check off the boxes for what components were required, but there was no heart behind their writing. For their second research essay I pulled in materials from a variety of local libraries and discovered that, when students were able to explore the topics they were interested in, their writing was transformed. The informational books I am hoping to be able to purchase through DonorsChoose will provide students a variety of topics to explore in future research essays.
