As a special needs teacher, my (greatest) desire is to encourage lifelong learning in my students, as well as introduce them to the wonders of nature. This project will specifically benefit two self-contained classrooms for children with autism, from kindergarten through fifth grade. My goal is to build an outdoor classroom with a functional garden as a teaching tool for these exceptional students. I previously implemented a similar garden with success at my former school, and I am especially excited about seeing the joy and wonder that it I know it will bring to these children at Smith.
