I am starting a new job at a new school, and I immediately want students to know how passionate I am about reading, and how eager I am to see them build their own reading lives. In order for this to happen, I want to build a successful classroom library, and that means having books representative of the world. I want to purchase books for my students that feature diverse characters and authors. I want the protagonists in my classroom library to vary based on race, culture, religion, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, ability, life circumstance, and so much more! Students can learn so much through reading: empathy, tolerance, world knowledge. These books would sit on shelves for my students to check out to read during class, at home, on the bus--anywhere and everywhere!
