My goal in asking for a classroom set of Julia Alvarez's In the Time of the Butterflies is to replace To Kill a Mockingbird with a text that centers the voices of my English Learners. I want to give them an example of how young people in this world can make a difference as emerging social justice and political leaders. Since I cannot predict how school will look like for them in the fall, and I don't want them reading everything on a tablet, I am going to give my students the opportunity to take books home and read along with their families.
