I am the librarian for a suburban Title I elementary school with 100% of the school receiving free or reduced price lunch. My students speak 16 different languages resulting in a high number of students who are English Language Learners (ELL). At home the family either speaks very little or no English. Many of the students do not have access to books at home, and this is their avenue to experience the world of books. I want to provide a meaningful, fun and comfortable atmosphere for this experience. My students need a place to gather and lose themselves in my stories. A colorful and welcoming carpet will bring us together for these moments, make lasting good memories, and teach them that school is a safe and positive place to be. It will also help them to focus, feel included, and build a stronger classroom community.
