Students I serve range in age from 10 to 14 years old. Most of my students come from the nearby neighborhoods, but many of them join us as part of our magnet program from all over the city of Austin. Much like Austin itself, my students are socio-economically, racially, ethnically, religiously, and culturally diverse; bringing with them a variety of views and experiences to share with one another. While the benefits of this diversity are made apparent as students learn from one another, in many cases, students are also introduced to the uncontrollable inequities they face and the privilege they may or may not be a part of. As a teacher, it is my focus to maintain my classroom as a neutral environment for learning and experiencing science through a variety of engaging activities. Regardless of a student's previous academic background, I strive to challenge every one of them and close any pre-existing learning gaps.
