Young children develop their love of reading through listening opportunities provided with quality literature. By using a listening center, including the requested CD player and headphones at school, children can have stories at their fingertips and read or sing along with the recorded narrator. It can also open up music appreciation and an opportunity to sing favorite songs over and over. I read to and sing with my kindergartners in class every day, but I believe in today's "hurry up" society, there is not enough lap reading going on in the home. Using a listening center at school will give my students that extra "lap" time and expose them to good literature which will help instill a love for reading. I also hope to expose them to more genres in music and promote a love for singing, as well. Using a listening center would also be a great way of reinforcing previously read stories and giving students opportunities to hear their favorites again and again!
