My class is full of 20 low income students who rely on their provided breakfast and lunch everyday. I often have kids asking and sneaking breakfast in their book bags for younger siblings and to eat over the weekend. Last year, I sent snacks packs home with students on Friday's to eat over the weekend. They beg for food for the weekend for themselves and their family members. I was only able to provide snack packs twice a month because of the expense. We have been in school for only 20 days and already students are wanting and begging for snacks and crying when because they hungry. They often eat hot chips or candy before they come to school. I want them to have a healthy fuel to create a healthy mind in school and also to take home on Friday's for the weekend. Because with the home visits I've already made I know some homes are unable to provide healthy choices. Our focus is often on " grab and go" foods thought out the year. I want to model for my students" good go" foods that help stimulate the body and the mind. Having healthy snack options will keep students minds thinking about achieving and succeeding not where their next meal will come from.
