My students yearn to visit and experience things and places they hear and read about. Due to poor social and economic factors, the vast majority of my fifty-two students have NEVER traveled beyond a twenty mile radius of our area. When polled last month, only two of the fifty-two have traveled outside of the city limits within the past two years! However, students are often expected to come to school with working background knowledge of various cultures, climate, geographical differences, and societal differences. Without prior schema to activate, my students are unable to make real-world connections and are at a significant disadvantage, when tasked with making correlations and observations. Through the Google Expeditions kit, along with a Nearpod subscription, I aim to bring to life our Earth, Solar System, and travel around the world with the students. Hence, exposing them to fascinating people and places they would never dream possible. Bringing the world to life will help them in the future to make those real-world connections that are extremely critical in their education. Imagine studying underwater ecosystems or viewing historical sites from the American Revolution...the possibilities are limitless! In addition, recent studies suggest that education through VR can improve knowledge retention and concentration. This equipment and subscription will eliminate the need for school bus field trips that can be costly and limit participation due to the lack of parental financial resources. Through this project, students living at or below poverty levels will have the opportunity to see a brand-new world, to understand that life extends beyond the city limits, and how much opportunity for them really does exist!
