In my guidance classes and counseling sessions for grades PreK-6, I use picture books to help children understand issues having to do with friendship, kindness, diversity, positive decision-making and an array of different issues they face in their life. The power to laugh, to cry, to find empathy and emotion, all can happen with the right book. I often get asked by parents what books we use in lessons so they can read them alongside their child. This project would create a parent library in my classroom in which additional copies of books I use in class and sessions are available for parents to "check out" to read on their own or with their child. This library would also display and make available additional books for students to read during our "center time" on specific topics that pertain to our lessons and guidance curriculum. I have requested a bookcase to display this books, as well as the picture books that I use in my curriculum and beyond. These books align with the ASCA standards for classroom guidance curriculum and include books on friendship, career, social skills, bullying, problem solving, classroom skills, drug/alcohol awareness, self-confidence and positive peer relations. These include books that I use in my classroom lessons for grades PreK-6, as well as additional books on those topics to further their understanding. This project would allow parents to borrow books read in class as an opportunity to facilitate conversations with their child about topics discussed. Many parents are looking for ways to talk to their child about issues they face and this library would provide them the opportunity to start those discussions.
