I started teaching at West L. six years ago and it has been an amazing learning experience for me as well as the students. In the last few years I have really fell in love with technology in my classroom and how, if used correctly, it can enhance the learning experiences of students; forming more concrete moments. By getting the iPod and Google cardboard viewer, I plan to take my students on adventures around the world using Google Expeditions as we study different cultures (Social Studies standard). It is important for them to see how geography affects the way people live and how it influences their cultures and traditions. Ozobot Evo will be used cross-curricular by adding the engineering standard in the NYS Next Generation Science Standards to other subject areas (coding a timeline, sequence of a story, butterfly lifecycle). By providing materials to enhance hands-on learning, students will remain engaged in instruction and will internalize content being taught; it will create lasting memories. From experience, I find that students remember the lessons and concepts taught that they had first-hand control of their learning process. By obtaining the items asked for, I plan to have students lead their learning through project based learning (STEAM activities). We will be making anemometers to explore weather using dixie cups, popsicle sticks, rubber bands, and the hot glue gun. We will also discuss animal adaptations through the reading and listening of the books listed and demonstrate research by creating lapbooks from the file folders. Students will study plants with the flower cross-section and will grow plants using the planters. Students will observe the water cycle by creating models using the Ziploc bags. Students will use the magnetic wands, pullleys, and marbles to explore forces and motion in engaging activities.
