Did you know that research shows that young children provided with instrumental instruction score significantly higher on tasks measuring spatial-temporal cognition, hand-eye coordination, and arithmetic (Rauscher, 2001, 2002, 2006; Rauscher, LeMieux, & Hinton, 2005; Rauscher et al., 1997; Rauscher & Zupan, 2000)? When children spend time learning to play a musical instrument, they gain cognitive skills that can be transferred to other important areas of study, such as math. The ukeleles that we will purchase through this project will help my students experience music and gain skills that could lead to improvements in math, too. Currently our school does not offer an official music class, but I don't want my students to miss out on the opportunity to learn about music. Twenty-four ukeleles is enough for an entire classroom of students. I will donate tuners and plastic tubs for safe storage. By keeping the ukeleles stored in this manner, it will be easy for any teacher at my school (in grades 2-12) to borrow the instruments for their classroom (And we have many teachers with musical experience!). The ukelele is a fun instrument to play, and my students are excited about this project. Currently, it's also a rather popular instrument, and it's easy to learn. My students won't even realize they're building skills that will help them academically! It's also really affordable, so I hope that if students enjoy playing, they can continue at home with their own instrument. We will practice several days a week, with the intention of performing a song at our Spring Performance (if not before).
