Having backpacking packs and lightweight tents will help make outdoor pursuits more accessible to my students. One of the biggest obstacles for all people to get into wild spaces is the expense of gear and a lack of experience. My students will be able to borrow gear we have amassed at school for a more affordable experience into National Forests and Oregon's outdoors for activities such as overnight backpacking trips, snow shoeing trips, day hikes, and river rafting. These adventures stay with my students for years to come and influence their lives in countless ways. Past club members have gone on to backpack Europe, attend college for ecology, explore more of Oregon, and invest in their own gear. This club is the seed that sprouts a life-long love for the outdoors and a reason to fight for and protect our environment and wild spaces. The more opportunities young people have to get into the outdoors they more they will work to protect it.
