Over the past two years, I've created MAGIC for my students through room transformations. My Second Grade Superheroes have transformed into Secret Agents for our Place Value Spy Lab, Interns at our Fractions-Themed Jurassic Park, Contestants at our Measurement Glow Games, as well as Creators at our Geometry Candyland. Through these room transformations, students have been able to review and practice our rigorous curriculum in a fun, engaging, unexpected way. I've found that our skills "stick with them" so much easier because they are all engaged in their learning, and are excited to do so. The surprise element is the best part of our transformations... they never know what "world" they'll be stepping into when they arrive at school! I'm looking to create an Outer Space Room Transformation that focuses on literacy skills for my students next year. My students will “meet” the inflatable aliens and will use context clues to infer what the martians are saying. They will also “travel” in the rocket ship and research the planets in our classroom solar system. Their task on this space voyage will be to identify the main idea and details of each passage. Finally, students will explore constellations and will create a STEM project focused on stars and light. I'm also looking to enhance my decorations for our Jurassic Park theme with more elements to make our classroom look authentic. By creating these engaging activities, my students lovecoming to school. They are eager to take on the challenges each activity presents, and are motivated to apply our skills in new ways. Room transformations have revived my teaching, and have proven to support academic growth in our content areas.
