My students-athletes from inner-city Phoenix are part of a pilot tutoring program that I created called the Bobcat Team Teacher Program. This program gives student-athletes from all cultures, areas, and various incomes an opportunity to learn and thrive, plus receive much needed academic support. Central High is the most diverse school in the Phoenix Union District. We serve a large refugee population, and over 40 languages are spoken at our school. I want to ensure that I can provide the best high school experience for our student-athletes. The Bobcat Team Teacher program is a season-long mentoring program in which a teacher volunteers to assist a team’s student-athletes to be more successful on and off the court/field. The “Bobcat Team Teacher” program seeks to provide academic, emotional, and social support, plus build positive relationships between staff and students on/off campus, which is one of our school's initiatives. Since online learning is our new norm as of now, the team teacher will participate in after school study hall online through TEAMS. The expectation is that student-athletes will email the team teacher and set up appointments for tutoring. Our students are in need of school supplies such as notebooks, whiteboards, dry erase markers, pens, pencils, binders, highlighters, post-it notes, calculators, headphones, and journals.
