I am the art teacher at a middle school of Science located in Anchorage, Alaska. CMSS hosts 7-8th grade students and is unique in many ways; it is a STEAM School, Title I, and serves both neighborhood and charter students. It is also in one of the most diverse districts in the United States, the Anchorage School District. I am fundraising to purchase six electric pottery wheels for students at CMSS to use during their time in middle school art. There are many benefits in using pottery wheels including problem-solving, the development of creativity, and therapy. Throwing wheels naturally pique student interest and help build a positive creative experience at an age where creativity is deeply vulnerable and challenging. Middle school children are at a turning point in their creative development and finding ways to hook them into the arts at this point in their lives can impact their core beliefs about themselves as artists or creative individuals. Using pottery wheels is a positive way to help put students on a creative path that works for them. In addition, the wheel challenges students to practice their patience, perseverance, and risk-taking skills. Throwing on the wheel is difficult, with high failure rates in the beginning. Regardless of failure, the wheel is an enchanting experience that inspires students to keep trying and work through their failures. It can provide therapeutic effects for students by allowing them to participate in taxing and intricate physical activity that reminds the brain that we can exercise control even in challenging situations, which can assist in their social-emotional learning. With the help of donations, the purchase of the pottery wheels would be used for many years, multiple times per year by students in their growth in the CMSS art program.
