As a school social worker, I am often tasked with talking to young children about difficult topics. It is my mission to prepare the young children in my school with the tools necessary to cultivate positive feelings about themselves, promote self acceptance, manage their emotions, and recognize the importance of showing kindness towards others. I enjoy finding creative avenues to explore topics with students in regard to their social-emotional wellness, and one of the most effective methods is through books. I love how books can be a powerful tool to be used individually and in classroom programming when navigating through a variety of social and emotional topics. Talking about their worries through a character’s story that parallels their own is useful in observing a child’s feelings about their situation without addressing the matter directly. This helps avoid potential embarrassment on the child’s behalf and encourages a more open discussion. Children are also able to identify with the characters in stories and in doing so, oftentimes are more effectively able to apply the lessons and messages to their own lives.
