Students across my school district, and specifically in my schools are often severely lacking in basic knowledge of geography. They are unaware of the differences between cities and states and countries and continents. Research supports the notion that reading skills improve when they are taught in conjunction with content knowledge. My students have very limited exposure to the world outside their own neighborhoods. I hope to utilize geography and world culture as the unifying theme in my reading instruction to broaden their world knowledge while building basic literacy skills. Please help me build my library so I can implement thematic lesson units with my students.
