I have seen the excitement in previous years (as an assistant teacher) when students connect with others across the globe - both students, scientists, park rangers, and authors. My current students are very inquisitive and are constantly wondering why authors write the way they do or even what different places are like. My students are noticeably more engaged if they have a "real world connection" to what is being taught. The Meeting Owl conference camera will allow my students to meet with others around the globe, exchange thoughts and experiences, and most importantly, make real world connections. The way the conference camera is designed, my students will not have to crowd around a tiny webcam or struggle to hear the speaker...the Meeting Owl automatically pans the room and zooms on the speaker; the audio is omni-directional, too. I've seen what using Skype in the Classroom does for student engagement and learning, and I would like that to continue. I am hoping the addition to the classroom will keep them wanting to engage and learn even more...even after they head into middle and high school.
