Our district has approved science standards that are rigorous and investigative in nature. Unfortunately, materials were not provided to supplement the curriculum. The current state of my classroom regarding science materials and technology will pose a challenge for me to successfully implement the new standards at the level expected. We have very few supplies and/or materials for science. In the past, our district provided us with science kits. These kits provided the teacher with books and materials necessary to properly deliver instruction as well as it provided the students with opportunities to investigate, explore, and make connections. Science was able to come alive for the students. Funds will be used to purchase materials that allow them to experience in a hands-on manner. These materials will support the new stndards based curriculum that had been adopted by the state and parish. Materials purchased will support instruction in the areas of matter, ecosystems, and Earth's systems. I will purchase materials and technology that will allow my students to investigate and explore. They will observe caterpillars as they undergo physical changes. The will analyze using microscopes. My student would greatly benefit from materials that allow them to connect science to real life. The students would have a much better opportunity of scoring at the proficiency level or higher on their science post-test. I tell my students daily that they are smart and capable of great things. Having a classroom complete with he tools necessary to deepen and enrich their science experience will only add to their confidence levels and make their goals more attainable.
