I like to call my classroom "The Galaxy of Shining Stars" because I truly feel that for these students the sky is the limit. The students enrolled in my class are all identified as having autism. They suffer from a range of deficits in social skills, communication, behavior, and academic learning that impedes their ability to be successful in a larger general education class. It is my goal, hope, and dream, that when they leave my classroom they will be ready (socially, emotionally, and academically) to attend classes with their typically developing peers on a full-time basis. Our school is a large high-performing urban school. However, most of my students are bused here from schools in economically challenged areas, and they do not have home access to the learning experiences and tools, such as Internet or technology, that other students from the school have in their home. They need 21st century opportunities to maximize their learning potential and have the greatest level of success.
