I am a first year teacher and I have quickly noticed that my students do their best learning when they are not sitting in traditional desk chairs; I want students to choose where in the room that they want to do their best learning. I have always been interested in flexible seating as there is an abundance of research stating how flexible seating options improve focus and help posture. Also, some of my students have ADHD and need movement during instruction time; wiggle cushions or yoga balls will offer some support for these students. The wiggle cushions will offer a wide variety of uses and give support to students that need more than the traditional desk chair! My students can use the wiggle cushion on their traditional desk chairs to offer more support or they can bring the wiggle cushion to a spot in the room to sit on and complete an activity, such as a quiz or reading in their chosen area. The yoga ball chairs with backs can offer a replacement for desk chairs, especially during small groups. In small groups, I will challenge students to do their best thinking; by having the yoga balls, students will be given the opportunity to focus more on what the content in our small groups is and be able to decrease the amount of distraction that their necessary movements cause to themselves and to others in their small group.
