My students are energetic, creative and curious. I teach sixth-grade English, and one of my greatest joys is seeing my students make a bee-line for the stack of new books that just arrived, or having a student say, "Mrs. Ferreira, I love this book." I was a journalist before I became a teacher, and I am a firm believer that students must be able to write clearly and coherently. It is incredible how many sixth-grade students do not know that they must capitalize all proper nouns every single time they write them. I have students who do not consistently capitalize their own names! So we write and we write and we write. I try to use our computers as much as possible because they are motivating, but technology can create its own set of issues, which we overcome somehow. Does it sound as though I love teaching? I hope so, because I do. When my class walks in every day the students energy and optimism make me smile.
