Independent reading is one of the most effective strategies for boosting student performance in school. As children read and become more confident in their ability to process, synthesize, and critique different texts, their willingness to challenge themselves soars. By filling my classroom with modern, relevant, and diverse books, my students will be given a platform to thrive. They are avid readers, especially when they can immediately make connections to the importance of a novel. When students are passionate about school, they want to spread that passion far. It is amazing how willing middle schoolers are to step into the spotlight when they feel they have something important to say. Books spark ideas, and ideas spark voice. I want to help my students find their spotlight by allowing them independent reading time in school. No book reports, no reading logs -- just an end-of-book presentation to showcase the thinking they have done and, hopefully, incite other students to pick up the books they've loved.
