My students are immersed in a blending learning environment, where they depend heavily on technology. This is the inaugural year of this new learning format, so students are adapting to the changes, and learning how to navigate their studies in new ways. The student population is considered to be on the rural fringe, and has a diverse make-up of races and backgrounds. Being once a "one stop light town", the community surrounding the school still very much has a small town feel, and the school itself is in the middle of woods and pastures, but it is home to an abundance of transplant residents. Although certainly not true in all cases, I have found that often my frequent readers are ones who have extenuating circumstances at home where their books provide them with comfort and solace. Several of the students I have met with thus far for the reading bowl exhibit these traits, and it is evident that they cling to their books for structure.
