I work at an urban school district in Texas. Over 95% of the students in our school are economically disadvantaged, 40% are Limited English Proficient, 25% are Mobile or move often, 17% qualify for Special Education and 64% are considered At-risk. Our population has many disadvantages to overcome, and one of the easiest ways to do that is to encourage reading. It seems like middle school is generally place for reluctant readers because reading for pleasure is not cool for most students. However, I have seen a change in our school. In the three years I have worked here I am proud to say that students have been reading more, checking out more books, and our grade level book clubs have great participation. I am truly excited about the culture of reading that is growing at my school, and I want it to continue to develop.
