As this new year approaches, I want to create an environment that will draw my students in, inviting them to make their own choices and to focus on what truly matters to them. Through the use of tables and rolling chairs, I hope to give them a more flexible choice in their seating arrangements. Students learn better if they have more control in their learning and can focus because of a sense of comfort. When students feel empowered with choice and comfort, they center their attention on deeper thinking. A 7th grader has a very short attention span, but finding that just perfect seat can help him focus just a little longer, allowing that good idea to come out. Many of my students have a hard time taking ideas deeper, developing them, explaining them, discussing them. I hope that with the implementation of choice in seating, my students will be able to focus better and longer, creating a pocket of time that will encourage them to invent lasting thought.
