The majority of my students have never been out of the state of Arkansas. I live and teach in the Arkansas Delta, one of the poorest regions in the country. Because they have been exposed to so little, they are incredibly curious. I get the opportunity to bring them new knowledge each day and watch their faces light up. Occasionally a good portion of the period is spent asking and answering questions, usually about science, sometimes about life. The most revealing question lately: "Ms. W., so if you don't get food stamps, do you pay for your own groceries?
