Third graders in Room 21 love to learn about animal adaptations, ecosystems, and life cycles. "We're hatching REAL chicks in our classroom!" announce the children to any visitor who peeks at our incubator. Don't worry, the little chicks are guaranteed a happy life-long home at the teacher's 5 acre hobby farm, and her neighbor's free-range organic egg ranch. The hatchlings remain in the classroom brooder for 4 days before being placed under a broody Silkie hen. Chicka Chicka Boom Boom is a humane and responsible project with guaranteed good homes for ALL chicks we may hatch. It's so much fun to share something really special with my students--an experience they may never forget! It's more than fun, it's STEM! The children develop technology skills by learning to manage the incubator, taking daily temperature and humidity readings with the thermometer, weighing and measuring eggs and chicks with the scale, and keeping data tables . They practice their math skills by collecting, and analyzing the data, and using the data to create tables and graphs. Children are eager to share their findings with children from kindergarten and first grade, as well as with their own families during Open House! This life science project demonstrates the sensitive structures and functions of living organisms. It shows how one species develops and is adapted for survival in ecosystems which meet its needs. We are requesting model (stuffed) chickens for our bulletin board, a chick starter kit, chick feed, and a brooder (that's safer than the traditional heat lamp bulb) to make this end-of-year project EGGSTRA
