We have an exciting opportunity to bring an iPad-based reading system into our classroom to boost children’s reading skills. Unlike many iPad activities where children are one-on-one with a tablet, with this reading system children read with a buddy and share in the work of decoding words. They learn together rather than in isolation. The system dovetails with our Tools of the Mind curriculum which is designed to build children’s executive function skills and emphasizes playful learning and building a community of learners. The reading program, called PowerTools, lets children read original, engaging, science-based stories. Each story is written at multiple reading levels so there’s one for every learner in my classroom. The stories are closely integrated with wider science themes and concepts children explore in my class, so they develop their scientific understanding while learning to read. Studies show the average beginning reader spends only 6 minutes a day reading, and struggling readers rarely spend more than a minute. Children in Power Tools pilot studies tripled the time they spent engaged in supported reading practice. Tripling the amount of supported reading in my classroom would result in powerful outcomes for my students. The PowerTools system also captures and analyzes data on my students’ reading development. I can quickly access a summary of the word patterns and sight words my students need to practice more, how well they are comprehending text, and how fluently they are reading. With this information, I can personalize instruction for each learner with a new ease and specificity. I can even send readers personalized messages with suggestions for stories and skills to focus on. I’m so excited about integrating this this into my classroom. Please help me give my Kindergarten students the gift of reading, and a strong foundation of science knowledge!”
