My students love to collaborate and take ownership in their own learning. My project to incorporate flexible seating in my classroom can foster a learning environment tailored to my students' individual learning styles. Students learn best when they have some control over their environment and flexible seating allows students to choose what works best for their mind and body. With the option to choose their seating, they are also choosing who they collaborate with best. Flexible seating also enables students to engage in a greater variety of postures and movements, including walking, lying down, leaning against a wall or desk, perching, or even squatting. Brain research confirms that physical activity – moving, stretching, and walking – can actually enhance the learning process. The brain learns best and retains most when the organism is actively involved in physical activity. This type of stimulation helps students to focus, process information, and increase productivity. Your help to provide flexible seating in my classroom will foster a learner-centered environment that will empower the students ability to make decisions and to actively engage in their learning.
