On the surface, challenging or disruptive behaviors can look like a need for discipline. At our school, we aim to look beyond the surface in order to truly understand and serve our students. We know that many behaviors are merely a symptom of something larger occurring in the minds of our students. Therefore, we believe that our students are best served through trauma-informed rather than punitive practices. Calming corners are one way we provide students with restorative space. Calming corners are private spaces where students have the opportunity to deescalate in a safe, non-disruptive way. For example, students can participate in yoga, release energy on punching bags, sit in a sensory swing, engage with sensory tools, or get comfortable while listening to calming music. Our calming spaces are always accompanied by adult-led self-reflection. We believe reflection is crucial to helping students solidify learning around how to function as the healthiest version of self. Calming corners are an important element in our learning environment because they help students build self-awareness, self-regulation, and self-advocacy skills. Punishment teaches students what’s acceptable or unacceptable in a certain setting. Instead, a trauma-informed approach helps students learn how to recognize their emotions, learn their triggers, and master healthy ways to manage challenging feelings. Ultimately, calm corners help maximize both academic and social-emotional learning! Rather than punishment, students get what they truly need during challenging times, and therefore become stronger individuals who can get back to learning quicker.
