I am an ESOL endorsed of a 1st and 2nd grade blend. The poverty rate at our school is 40% and rising. We have an increasing number of English Language learners each year. Many students in my class are dealing with learning disabilities and ADHD. I teach in a building that is currently overcrowded with an outdated and under-maintained heating and cooling system. With recent budget cuts and the current economy, teachers are being asked to do much more with much less, while class sizes and student needs increase. Students at my school struggle with reading and writing. My district has adopted and is enforcing a new policy this year that eliminates our morning recess to create a longer block of time for literacy. With my current group of high energy students, I must work harder than ever to hold their attention and keep them engaged.
